Garden…..Container Style!

We knew with our move this year, the garden would have to be ‘container style’. We started some things (mainly potatoes!) over at the old place, but within a couple days of being here the girls and I (more so the girls) planted tons of herbs, beans, peppers, peas, radishes, lettuces, spinach, pickling cucs, flowers and a few tomatoes (sadly I wanted to plant TONS of tomatoes this year–but the growing up at this elevation/location is SHORT)! Everything is coming up so quickly and very nicely!  We are going to have loads of beans to can this year–for sure!  We will also be able to enjoy some very nice summer salads & have lots of herbs to dry for cooking, canning, spice mixes, medicinals, etc :)

So while our garden won’t be ‘everything’ we hoped for–it will be (barring any deer invasion :) chock full of  lots of things we will use, enjoy and be blessed by!

If you haven’t put down any seed this year–hurry!  Even if you put in ONE thing–whether it be beans, herbs, whatever your family eats a lot of and will be blessed by, it’s fun to watch it grow, educational for all, tastes better than anything store bought and a budget blessing!

Some varieties take 90 days or less–and soon, you will be enjoying FRESH produce too! :)

Enjoy~

Weelllllll……….we made it!

It’s been a LONG road, but we made it. We are finally in our new homestead, and finally feel like we are making some headway in getting things back to normal…whatever that is?!

Everyone made it, including the chickens, dogs and goats & we’re all slowly getting used to our new digs. We have learned a few lessons already, including not to leave the door open at sunset, as we did the first night we were here. We were all exhausted, got the animals set up in their new homes, and we’re setting up our beds and thought we’d let a little fresh air in.  My youngest daughter says, “There is a little bird in here.” As my husband looks around he discovers that ‘little bird’ is a BAT.

UGH & EW. Bats gross me out, end of story.

So, thankfully dh had left a couple brooms from his work on the cabin before the children & I got there….we both grab one. We both start swingin’ at it…I hear the ol’ man say something about a door….I think “It’s by the door?” Thats GOOD. We are both spastically flailing around like morons trying to kill this bat, and more likely to knock each other in the head with the brooms and I hear him, “GET the DOOR, HONeeeeee!” So I open the other door, we’re hoping it will fly out and BOOM, the ol’ man nails it with his broom (once I get out of the way) and it’s dead. (Please, no PETA people email me–k?) We finish putting up the beds, day over. lol

It’s been a little slow going getting all ’systems’ up and running, but ‘we’ ( I use this term loosely)  got the hot water running, we’re figuring out the composting toilet (another TIP for those considering a composting toilet? BE SURE it is LEVEL before you start using it!), the ‘fridge in and the washing machine running!!! Off ‘the grid’… yes….but unless REQUIRED I will still use the washing machine. :)   Doin’ ONE load thru the tub & wringer is fun…..romantic…..a la’ Little House…….anything more than that is pure back breakin’ work…..and we paid for that washing machine–we’re gonna USE it! lol I have other things I need to use my energy on at the current time :)

Today I am working at finishing up getting the last few boxes that are in the area where the wood cook stove is going,  sorted & put away. Dh has been putting up shelves everywhere for me, I love it! He is using a gorgeous, plain, natural pine for the windowsills, trims and shelves–so pretty! Anyhew….the rest of the shelves & window trims are going up and today I hope to finish up putting away the rest of the contents of those boxes so that area is cleaned up and ready for the wood cook stove which arrives Monday! The girls have panted the bulk of our container garden already (and so much is popping up already!!) & they are busy creating a new outside ‘fort’ area, which is coming along quite nicely and the ‘little~man’ is busy reorganizing everything after me. Ahhhh…nothing like progress!  :)

Until next time…
