Scripture Quotes

Also, make it your ambition to live quietly, to mind your own business and to earn your living by your own efforts — just as we told you.   Then your daily life will gain the respect of outsiders, and you will not be dependent on anyone.

Simply…wonderful!

Simplicity. I love it. One of my favorite, simple, frugal things that is such a blessing at our homestead– is the lowly ol’ reused bakery bucket. I love these things– they are so so SO versatile! We pick them up at the little local grocery or a bakery we drive by on our way into town, usually free, sometimes they charge $1. They are used for everything from hauling water and animal feed, to hauling the days fresh picking from the garden, to taking cooled woodstove ashes to the firepit, to long term food storage– the list is endless.

TIP: ALWAYS be sure you are getting FOOD GRADE buckets (usually white in color at our local spots we pick them up at, and they tend to smell of maple donut icing–hint hint ;) that have ONLY stored FOOD). Obviously you will want to clean them when you get home.  Nothing else will do, when it comes to reusable, recycled buckets. You can buy new buckets– but they can get SPendY!

The larger heavy duty ones (not the smaller 2 or 3 gallon ones) I use in my food storage efforts, but lugging out a big bucket, cutting open the mylar bags inside (I store all our ’storage  food’ in mylar, within the buckets), resealing….kind of a pain. Enter the Gamma Lid, (fancy lid pictured above) these beauties fit right onto the bucket, with a twist open /close lid and a seal to keep everything fresh, and free from bugs and critters.  I don’t  “Gamma Lid”  EVERYTHING (these lovely lids run $5-7 each!)  but my main food storage items I use on a very regular basis; flour, rice, pasta, gluten free baking mix– that type of thing.  These have made using and rotating my storage foods a LOT more convenient, an added bonus is now that my ‘little man’ is almost 4, he loves to grab buckets and pull them back to the storage area– so I don’t even have to put them away now!  I also use them to store extras–such as when I find toothbrushes & toothpaste on sale, I will also store extra socks and underwear in them when I find them on sale,I just toss them in a bucket with a regular lid, label them. Easy storage–they stack nicely :)

Find a local source– just go into any bakery or store with a bakery and ask– most of the time they are all toooo happy to get rid of them–FREE!   These are a great mutilpurpose frugal item to keep around your homestead– TONS of uses :)

The Busy Season…

I think that EVERY season has it’s own ‘busyness’ about it…however, lately– this season has really brought new meaning to the word.  It’s just been crazy around here. Blessed crazy :)   Here are some shots from around the homestead that show more than words can say…

We’ve been putting our canners to EXCELLENT use lately…! Soup anyone?

Since summer didn’t REALLY get going til July 5th (typical!) and it just seemed to be a REALLY OFF year in the food production arena (NO and I mean NOTHING was produced on any plum, apple or pear on our property this year –I’ve heard this from others as well…that is very strange!) so we went to the local farm and bought 40 lbs of picklin’ cucs…canned them up…only to have the garden start to produce– I have I think at last count over 40 QUARTS of pickles. Considering only 2 people in the house eat them….I think we’re stocked.

Apples have been coming in…in addition to fresh eating (of course!) we’ve been dehydrating them…

Then came all the goodies for homemade SALSA….mmmmmM!

and today….

Green Beans! 15 lbs of fresh green beans to can up :)

oh…and pears…15lbs of pears….

Another busy, very blessed day– we are very thankful, He always provides for us ;)
